The vast Phoenix Saga might take two films

The somewhat jumbled Fox X-Men MCU (sometime called the XMCU) will have another go at the Phoenix Saga with the upcoming and official X-Men movie sequel. Confirmed to be released late next year, the film now has a title, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Previously code named X-Men Supernova the name announcement stamps the letter on the next storyline. But what is the Phoenix Saga and how will it fit into the existing universe. There are general and broad story spoilers below if don’t want to know anything about the storyline.

What Is The Phoenix Saga

Teased in X2: X-Men United, and poorly handled (as a substory) in X-Men: The Last Stand the Phoenix Sage is a significant tome in the volumes of the X-Men. Often separated into two parts the saga begins with Jean Grey returning from a mission in space with the team, when she is exposed to lethal solar radiation. Leaving out many of the details here Jean dies, and upon her death, and resurrection she arrives back on Earth completely changed. She now remakes herself with a new costume, new identity and crazy new powers. Now the Phoenix from the ashes her abilities are legendary, literally saving the universe at one point.

But the power is too much, and phase two of the Phoenix Saga centers on the demise of Jean as the Phoenix. Her immense abilities, and sabotage from outside parties eventually resulted in Jean becoming overwhelmed and corrupted. In a comic book overreach (in my opinion) Jean actually consumes an entire star, killing billions of people in a solar system. In effect the largest mass murder ever. Although it’s important to note later in a major retcon of Jean’s actions, or lack thereof, there is a significantly altered version of the second phase of the Phoenix saga. Again leaving out many of the details, Jean and the Phoenix Force live on.

The Phoenix Saga and DOFP

With the Fox X-Men Universe reset after Days of Future Past the studio is free to retell the story of the Phoenix. In an interview with MTV producer Simon Kinberg basically said you can forget that earlier X1 X2 timeline because “We sort of reset the clock on Days Of Future Past. And so a lot could have changed from that point in 1973 forward.” It will be interesting to see how X-Men Dark Phoenix will tell the tale.

Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, will return for a major spotlight on her young character. X-men writer-producer Simon Kinberg told Slash Film “the main mistake we made in that movie [Last Stand] was taking the Dark Phoenix story, which is such a vast and profound saga, and making it the subplot of the movie as opposed to the main plot of the movie. I think if we were to make a Dark Phoenix movie in the future, it would be a Dark Phoenix movie about her struggle, and really should be the A plot and the primary of the movie.”

Kinberg is rumored but yet to be announced as the director of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. It is expected to begin filming this summer in beautiful Montreal. (Whats with X-Men movies being shot in the Canadian woods?) Targeted for release on November 2nd 2018, Josh Boone’s New Mutants” arrives April 13th.
