What story will Sony use for the Venom Movie?

Spider-Man’s longtime arch nemesis Venom will get its own stand-alone feature movie next year. Long in the works at Sony we haven’t heard much of anything about the movie until lately. Of course the whole Spider-Man IP had been on hold at Sony while it was being reevaluated. But spidy is coming back in a big way, with a cross-over appearance in the Avengers, and awesome looking upcoming video game, and this summer’s block buster movie Spider-Man: Homecoming which arrives July 7th.

Venom was one of several properties that were in the works at Sony before the landmark deal with Marvel Studios was finally hatched. After the agreement and the Sony hacking, several projects hit the circular folder on the floor. The trash included the now canceled Amazing Spider-Man 3, but apparently Venom has survived, and according to Variety it even has a release date. Hitting theaters October 5th 2018, we don’t know if the Venom movie “spinoff” will occupy the same universe as Spider-Man: Homecoming, or the larger MCU. Confused as to who owns which Marvel Characters movie rights, we break it down for you.

Fellow comic book readers will know Venom has be reinvented in numerous incarnations since its appearance in 1988. The most famous a first “attachment” was Peter Parker. But since its arrival on Earth the alien Symbiote has attached itself to more than half dozen people. Will Sony launch Venom as a counter to Spider-Man, almost an alternate universe version of the web slinger, or maybe as a sequel to Homecoming?

Venom is “we” as in “Hello, we are Venom”

Although personally I would find a separate Venom series super interesting. With a new film for each host the possibilities grow. While generally evil, Venom is a complex hybrid of the host and the alien. They have flashes of anti-heroism, vigilantism, and even helpfulness. Each new host adds dimension to the creature, and creates a unique opportunity for a soft-reboot each time.

Spider-Man: Homecoming comes home this July, and he will return in Avengers: Infinity War May 4th (Star Wars Day) 2018 followed by Venom Movie on October 5th. The Spider-Man video game may arrive this fall.
