According to The Hollywood Reporter Star Trek will return to it’s origins on the small TV screen. One of the producers behind some of Star Trek films is developing a Star Trek TV series which promises a “new take” on the franchise. The new take is probably a must have for a series that first aired some 50 years ago, and you thought Star Wars was old school.

Kurtzman produced and co-wrote both the 2009 franchise reboot and the more recent 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness. There have been 12 Star Trek films to-date with Star Trek Beyond coming in 2016.

The sci-fi series is set to debut in January 2017 on CBS, but in a strange twist only the first episode will air on the network. Subsequent episodes of the yet un-named Star Trek TV show will air on CBS’ streaming and video on-demand service called CBS All Access. This is either showing some weakness in the offering or just the opposite – Star Trek to become a franchise cornerstone of All Access.

CBS hopes to drive subscriptions as it begins to compete with other subscription services like Netflix and HBO. Its going to need some unique original content and certainly Star Trek (done right) can answer that call. Dom Caristi of Ball State University thinks, “Selecting the Star Trek franchise as its first original series for OTT (subscription) distribution is a wise choice. Trekkies are known as a small but loyal audience.” Currently the cross-platform streaming service offers thousands of episodes of content for $5.99 per month.

Star Trek certainly knows how to live long and prosper.
